One of New York City's Oldest Greek Orthodox Communities

In 1891 an organization was established in New York City calling itself "Athena Society." Its 1,000 or so members dedicated themselves to helping Greek newcomers to adapt to life in the United States. Its founder Solon Vlastos, an established businessman was also the founder of the Greek newspaper "Atlantis." It was the Athena Society which petitioned the Ecumenical Patriarchate to send a priest to the community which eventually became known as Evangelismos Tis Theotokos (Annunciation of the Theotokos). After migrating through several spiritual homes across New York City, in 1953 the community settled into its current Upper West Side home located on West End Avenue and West 91st St.
